Spain – lorry drivers strike and block highways due to fuel prices

Friday last week Spain deployed 23.000 police officers as drivers had stopped their trucks – blocking several roads.

There were also reports of alleged incidents that trucks had been attacked or been thrown rocks at when continuing their routes. Also, burning tyres were thrown onto the highway in north-western Spain.

The week started with a strike. The walkout has now threatened to disrupt national supply chains. Later this month Spanish government plan to introduce measures against high energy and fuel prices. Last year energy prices have risen as much as 70% in the country. There has also been scattered protests in France.

According to Reuters “A truck drivers strike for better working conditions has caused disruption at some supermarkets and certain industries in Spain, with dairy food producers complaining on Thursday of some supply shortages as they received less milk”. They refer to the truck drivers calling the situation “total bankruptcy”.

For our customers importing from Spain, either by sea or road -  it can mean it will be difficult to get the goods out the country. The operation team will inform customers if there are any problems.
